Michelle Weinberg - Artist's Statement
My work appropriates iconography from pop culture and folkloric/archetypal
imagery. My favorite sources are theater and opera, arts and crafts and
children's art. I create work in any medium - drawing/painting, collage,
papier mache/pinata, costume/installation - which provides an opportunity
to stylize mundane reality.
I'm interested in things from everyday life; from television
to household cleaning products and toiletries, children's games, flowers,
consumer electronics, plates and cups, flashlights, aspirin and soap, pipes,
barbells, kitchen appliances, dresses, furniture, and message pads...
I like to make work which is accessible to people, in
which recognizable things are represented in a new light.
